Raw honey: enjoy the flavour, be careful with health claims

Honey can tell an interesting story about a place and a harvest without being advertised as a medicine. The worthwhile questions are where it came from, how it was handled and what the producer can substantiate.

Describe the product accurately

The term “raw” should not stand in for a clear explanation of handling. Ask the producer about extraction, straining, heating and storage, and check the meaning of any regulated label claims in your market.

Colour, texture and crystallisation can vary. A visually appealing jar does not by itself prove a particular origin, purity or processing method.

Do not turn food into an unsupported treatment claim

The original short post promised immune support, digestive benefits and wound healing from ordinary raw honey. Those broad recommendations have been removed.

Enjoy honey as a food; do not use a blog article as a reason to replace medical care or apply a food jar’s contents to a wound. Medical-grade products and ordinary kitchen honey are not interchangeable.

An important infant-safety rule

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises not giving honey to children younger than 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. This applies to honey added to food or drink as well as a spoonful from a jar.

For a personal health concern, ask an appropriate healthcare professional rather than relying on marketing descriptions.

Keep the harvest story traceable

For beekeepers, honest product information begins with harvest and batch records. Keep the date, source and handling information in a form you can retrieve.

ApiNote can hold harvest activity records and quantities. Retain any additional food-quality, labelling and traceability documents required for your operation; the app does not certify a jar’s contents.
