Spring feeding: assess stores before adding supplements

Supplemental feeding is a response to a shortage or a defined management need. It is not a guaranteed way to turn every spring colony into a stronger, more productive hive.

Check what is available

Assess accessible food stores and the pollen coming into the colony. A few flying bees or an isolated flowering tree do not establish that forage is sufficient for the whole apiary.

Review the trend as well as the snapshot. Brood demand and several days of poor weather can change the position quickly. Keep your observations with the hive’s previous feed records.

Know what each feed is for

Sugar feed supplies carbohydrate; pollen supplies nutrients needed for brood rearing. The National Bee Unit’s spring guidance treats both reserves and pollen availability as things to assess, not an instruction to supplement every colony.

Choose suitable bee feed and a method appropriate to the weather and hive. Ask a local mentor when conditions make that choice uncertain. Avoid adding household ingredients or supplements on the strength of an anecdote.

Be cautious about “secret” protein recipes

The original article promoted arginine-enriched dough with broad claims about immunity and survival. Those claims were not supported by a documented trial in the article and are not carried forward as a recommendation.

A supplement’s availability does not prove a benefit in your conditions. If you are evaluating one, record what you gave and the observations without attributing every later change to the feed.

Feed deliberately and reassess

Use suitable equipment, keep it clean and avoid spills that can encourage robbing. Keep feeding separate from honey intended for harvest.

Record the feed, quantity, date and reason. Check consumption and stores at the next appropriate visit, then adjust rather than continuing indefinitely because the previous week’s plan said so.
